Jazz is in the air, reggae music is never in short supply and sports is always on the agenda. The start of 2011 will keep us busy, active and entertained.

The National Health Fund (NHF) will be staging its 5K Fun Walk & Run on Sunday January 23, at Folly Estate, Port Antonio, Portland. The road race, which will start at 3:30 pm, is open to clubs, schools, corporate groups and individuals. The race route will see participants start at Folly Estate, then proceed onto Allan Avenue, Harbour Street, West Street, Errol Flynn Marina, Fort George Street, Gideon Avenue, Foreshore Road, Allan Avenue and ending at Folly Estate.

There is no entry fee and entries close on January 20. Entry forms can be collected at NHF and Jamaica Athletics Amateur Association (JAAA) offices. It can also be downloaded from the NHF website.

Queen’s/Grace Jackson Track Meet

The 10th staging of the annual Queen’s/Grace Jackson Track Meet will take place on Saturday January 29 at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Usain Bolt Track in Mona. The meet will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The track events will include 200, 400, 800, 1500, 400-metre relay. While the field events will be shotput, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Entry fee for athletes will be $150 per athlete from a team or club while individuals will pay $400. Entry forms can be completed online.

Admission to this event will be $400 for adults and students will ID and children under 12 will pay $200.

High Mountain Coffee 10K & 5K Road Race

On Sunday January 30, Jamaica Standard Products will host the 28th annual staging of High Mountain Coffee 10K & 5K Road Race at Williamsfield in Manchester. The 5K run, open to athletes 16 years and under and the 5K walk will kick off at 2:30pm followed by the 10K run starting at 3:30pm. Registration can be done online as well as on the race day. Registration forms are available at all Fontana Pharmacies, Western Sports and Locker Room stores. Entry fee for adults is $300 while children are free.

Concerts

Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival

The annual Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival will take place from January 27 – 29 at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium. The lineup will see R&B legend Ron Isley performing on Thursday January 26 alongside Diana King, Brenda Russell, Alison Hinds, Phil Perry and Paul Peress. American rock group Maroon 5 will headline Friday night which will also feature R&B and jazz singer Regina Belle, Tavares, SWV and Richie Stevens. While Saturday night showcase will include Natalie Cole, Air Supply, Laura Izibor, Committed and Silver Birds Steel Orchestra.
