The University of the West Indies is one of the oldest tertiary institutions in Jamaica. Established in 1948 as a part of the University of London, the University became independent in 1962. It now proudly boasts four campuses across the Caribbean region; providing excellence in higher education to Caribbean citizens. The campuses are located at Mona in Jamaica, Cave Hill in Barbados, St. Augustine in Trinidad & Tobago and the Open Campus in the following countries:

UWI fulfills its mandate by offering high quality education to citizens of the 15 contributing countries in the Caribbean region as well as international students from all over the world. UWI Mona has five faculties: Humanities and Education, Law, Medical Sciences, Pure and Applied Science and Social Sciences. The institution delivers over 140 programmes on a part time and full time basis at the Undergraduate and Graduate level.
Application Period
Application for admissions for August 2011 for full time and part time degree and diploma programmes will close on January 31, 2011.
Applications should be made online and all applicants should submit the following required documents in its original form and one copy to any UWI Centre:
- birth certificates
- academic certificates
- professional certificates and/or diplomas
- any other relevant document to support application
Online application is free for all applicants.
Accommodation
The University has six halls of residence and each student is assigned to a hall at admission to the institution. This however, does not guarantee admission to the halls. Accommodation on these halls are limited, therefore only a small percentage of full time students are successful in getting acceptance to the various halls. The halls of residence are:
- Mary Seacole Hall
- Chancellor Hall
- A.Z. Preston Hall
- Irvine Hall
- Taylor Hall
- Rex Nettleford Hall
Mary Seacole Hall is for females only; Chancellor Hall is for males only while the remaining halls are co-ed.
Student Loans
Students' Loan Bureau (SLB), an agency of the Jamaican Government, offers educational loans to needy Jamaican students who are pursuing programmes accredited by University Council of Jamaica (UCJ). A list of accredited programmes is available on the UCJ’s website. The application period for SLB is from January to April of each year. Applicants can apply for loans before receiving a decision from the institution of their choice.
